Mine workers commend employers for supporting workers day

By William Milasi

Mine workers in the country have commended their employers for supporting them on the workers day.

Through the mine workers main trade union in the country, the Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Mineral Workers Union (ZDAMWU), mine workers have expressed gratitude for the support they received from their employers.

ZDAMWU which was represented in every mine across the country, with the General Secretary Justice Chinhema giving a keynote address at Bikita Minerals rolled out various activities on the day.

Some of the major mines which supported miners are Sabi Gold in Zvishavane, Renco Mine in Masvingo, Cam and Motor in Kadoma, Golden Valley in Kadoma, Bikita Minerals in Bikita and Old Nick Mine in Bulawayo.

“As Zdamwu we appreciate the role that management of these companies played in supporting the Workers Day by providing funds to make the day a success. We have to be cognizant of the fact that the activities took place at their mines and they had to suspend production time in commemoration of the day,” he said.

Chinhema expressed optimism that the turning point might point to improved relations between the miners and their employees.

“We hope and trust that the energy and support we saw during preparations and holding of Workers Day in some of these big mines will be a beginning of good things to come. It is heartwarming that some managers approved budgets for refreshments, we hope the support was not a bribe because we shall be bringing to the works council our seven demands which we mentioned in our May Day statement. We want to see the same support from management as they did on My Day on profit sharing, share ownership, and also we will open talks on decent housing and housing loans,” he said.
