19-year-old woman from Kwekwe arrested for kidnapping baby at Bus terminus in Shurugwi

A 19-year-old woman from Kwekwe as arrested in Shurugwi after a failed kidnapping attempt at a bus terminus.
The woman Rudo Jakarasi of Mbizo in Kwekwe on 22 January this year approached the baby’s mother Charity Muchau of Shurugwi who was selling green mealies at Pamumvuri Bus Terminus and asked to use her phone.
“A 19-year-old woman was apprehended by members of the public after she kidnapped a three-month-old baby at Pamumvuri bus terminus, Shurugwi on 22 January 2024 at around 1515 hours.
“It is alleged that she (Machau) was approached by the now suspect Rudo Jakarasi of Mbizo, Kwekwe who appeared to be in trouble and asked to use her cellphone saying she lost hers in a bus. Machau handed her the cellphone and continued with her work. After a while she discovered that Rudo was nowhere, she checked for her baby and found that the baby was also missing,” Police spokesperson in Midlands Emmanuel Mahoko said.
After losing her baby the 31-year-old launched a frantic search and alerted other vendors who also joined the search.
According to Mahoko luck ran out for the accused as, “she was caught along Gweru-Zvishavane Road. The baby was recovered in a stable condition and the suspect was handed over to the Police.”
Police is urging members of the public to be careful when dealing with strangers who might appear to be in need of help but actually looking for a chance to pounce.
